What is covered in APES Unit 5?
Land and Water Use explores how people produce food, extract materials and build communities. Connect each practice with its environmental effects, then evaluate ways to manage resources sustainably. Choose a topic to practise its ten flashcards.

- 5.16 Aquaculture (10 cards)
- 5.17 Sustainable Forestry (10 cards)
Unit 5 carries a published 10–15% weighting in the multiple-choice section. Use recall practice alongside data analysis, calculations and explanations of environmental solutions.
How to study land and water use with flashcards
- Trace cause and effect.Link a practice to a specific change: impervious surfaces increase runoff, or excessive harvesting reduces a resource’s ability to recover.
- Compare the tradeoffs. For irrigation, farming, forestry or aquaculture, explain the benefit, environmental cost and conditions that influence the result.
- Recall, then justify.Answer before flipping, mark uncertain cards as Needs practice and revisit them. Use the Unit 5 quiz to practise applying ideas to scenarios.
Solution check: name the practice, explain the mechanism and connect it to a measurable outcome. A vegetated buffer can slow runoff and trap sediment before it reaches a stream.
IPM check: identify the pest, monitor its population and use action thresholds before selecting controls. Chemical treatment can be part of IPM when appropriate.
Sustainability check: evaluate regeneration, pollution, biodiversity and resource demand together. A single label or a short transport distance does not establish the total environmental impact.
APES Unit 5 flashcard FAQs
What do APES Unit 5 flashcards cover?
These 170 flashcards cover all 17 Land and Water Use topics, from shared resources and agricultural practices to irrigation, pest control, meat production, overfishing, mining, urbanization, ecological footprints and sustainable resource management.
How much of the AP Environmental Science exam is Unit 5?
College Board assigns Unit 5: Land and Water Use a 10–15% weighting in the multiple-choice section. Include all nine course units in your exam revision.
How should I compare irrigation methods for APES?
Compare how water reaches the crop, water losses, cost and maintenance. Drip delivers water near roots and can reduce evaporation and runoff; spray and surface methods have different costs, energy needs and site constraints.
Does integrated pest management eliminate pesticides?
IPM does not necessarily eliminate pesticides. It uses pest identification, monitoring, prevention and action thresholds to choose suitable controls, with targeted pesticide use when needed and attention to risks.
