Unit 6 carries a published 10–15% weighting in the multiple-choice section. Combine recall practice with calculations, data analysis and explanations of energy solutions.
How to study energy resources with flashcards
- Follow the energy.Trace the source, conversion and useful output. Identify where energy is transferred as waste heat and distinguish power from energy.
- Compare the tradeoffs. For each technology, consider fuel availability, emissions, land and water use, reliability and waste across its life cycle.
- Calculate and review.Check units, show your working and mark uncertain cards as Needs practice. Use the Unit 6 quiz to apply the ideas to exam-style scenarios.
Power and energy check: energy = power × time. A 2 kW appliance running for 3 hours uses 6 kWh. A kilowatt measures power; a kilowatt-hour measures energy.
Efficiency check: useful energy output ÷ energy input × 100%. A system delivering 30 MJ of useful energy from 100 MJ of input is 30% efficient.
Classification check: renewable, low-carbon and reliable describe different properties. Hydrogen is an energy carrier; its production pathway determines much of its environmental impact.
APES Unit 6 flashcard FAQs
What do APES Unit 6 flashcards cover?
These 130 flashcards cover all 13 Energy Resources and Consumption topics, including resource types, energy use and distribution, fossil fuels, nuclear power, biomass, solar, hydropower, geothermal, hydrogen fuel cells, wind and conservation.
How much of the AP Environmental Science exam is Unit 6?
College Board assigns Unit 6: Energy Resources and Consumption a 10–15% weighting in the multiple-choice section. Include all nine course units in your exam revision.
What is the difference between renewable and low-carbon energy?
Renewable describes a resource that is naturally replenished on human timescales. Low-carbon describes relatively low greenhouse gas emissions over a life cycle. Nuclear fission is low-carbon but uses finite fuel; renewable technologies also have environmental impacts.
How do I calculate capacity factor in APES?
Divide actual electricity generated by rated power multiplied by the time period, then multiply by 100%. For a 2 MW turbine generating 12 MWh in 24 hours, capacity factor is 12 ÷ (2 × 24) × 100 = 25%. Keep the energy units consistent.
