What is covered in APES Unit 4?
Earth Systems and Resources connects processes in the geosphere, atmosphere and hydrosphere. Explain how plates move, soils develop, water drains and solar energy shapes winds and climate. Choose a topic to practise its ten flashcards.
- 4.1 Plate Tectonics (10 cards)
- 4.2 Soil Formation and Erosion (10 cards)
- 4.3 Soil Composition and Properties (10 cards)
- 4.4 Earth’s Atmosphere (10 cards)
- 4.5 Global Wind Patterns (10 cards)
- 4.6 Watersheds (10 cards)
- 4.7 Solar Radiation and Earth’s Seasons (10 cards)
- 4.8 Earth’s Geography and Climate (10 cards)
- 4.9 El Niño and La Niña (10 cards)
Unit 4 carries a published 10–15% weighting in the multiple-choice section. Combine flashcard recall with diagram interpretation, data analysis and written explanations.
How to study Earth systems with flashcards
- Compare the processes.Distinguish weathering from erosion, porosity from permeability, and divergent from convergent plate boundaries. Explain what each process changes.
- Sketch the system.Draw plate boundaries, atmospheric circulation, a watershed or a rain shadow. Label the movement of material, water and energy.
- Recall, then apply.Explain each answer before flipping. Mark uncertain cards as Needs practice, revisit that deck and use the Unit 4 quiz to check application.
Seasons check: Earth’s axial tilt changes solar angle and daylight duration as Earth orbits the Sun. Earth–Sun distance is not the main cause of the seasons.
Soil check: texture describes the proportions of sand, silt and clay. Porosity measures pore space; permeability depends on how easily water passes through connected pores.
ENSO check: connect Pacific sea-surface temperature, trade winds and upwelling. Weather effects are regional tendencies, and ENSO does not follow a fixed repeating schedule.
APES Unit 4 flashcard FAQs
What do APES Unit 4 flashcards cover?
These 90 flashcards cover all nine Earth Systems and Resources topics: plate tectonics, soil formation, soil properties, the atmosphere, global winds, watersheds, solar radiation and seasons, geography and climate, and El Niño and La Niña.
How much of the AP Environmental Science exam is Unit 4?
College Board assigns Unit 4: Earth Systems and Resources a 10–15% weighting in the multiple-choice section. Revise all nine course units as part of your exam preparation.
What is the difference between soil porosity and permeability?
Porosity is the fraction of soil volume occupied by pore spaces. Permeability describes how easily water moves through connected pores. Clay can have high porosity but low permeability because its pores are small.
How are El Niño and La Niña different?
El Niño features unusually warm central and eastern equatorial Pacific surface waters and typically weaker trade winds. La Niña features unusually cool waters and typically stronger trade winds. Both affect circulation and weather, with impacts that vary by region and event.
