1. Match the correct Biology examination
Life Science: Biology is the new examination based on the New York State P-12 Science Learning Standards. It began in June 2025. Living Environment is the legacy examination; its last administration was June 2026. These titles identify different exams, not interchangeable names for one curve. NYSED implementation schedule · 2026 administration directions.
| Exam | Administration | Maximum raw credits |
|---|---|---|
| Life Science: Biology | August 2026 | 48 |
| Life Science: Biology | June 2026 | 49 |
| Life Science: Biology | January 2026 | 45 |
| Life Science: Biology | August 2025 | 45 |
| Life Science: Biology | June 2025 | 48 |
| Living Environment · legacy | June 2026 | 85 |
| Living Environment · legacy | January 2026 | 85 |
The new exam is not always out of 50 credits. Among the supported papers, its published maximum is 45, 48 or 49. The calculator updates the allowed range when you select the chart. Enter credits earned, not a percentage or the number of questions attempted.
Legacy section entry
| Part | Question numbers | Maximum credits |
|---|---|---|
| A | 1–30 | 30 |
| B-1 | 31–43 | 13 |
| B-2 | 44–55 | 12 |
| C | 56–72 | 17 |
| D · written lab-related items | 73–85 | 13 |
| Total | Whole written paper | 85 |
Parts B-2 and D contain both multiple-choice and constructed-response items. Part D is not a separately administered hands-on practical. Do not use these five legacy fields for the new clustered exam. Official section and question-type details.
2. Mark the paper before converting
Add only earned credits using the answer key and rating guide for the exact paper. Written responses must satisfy the question’s rubric: scientific evidence, explanations, calculations, diagrams or units may matter. Writing a scientific keyword does not automatically earn a point. New exam keys, rating guides and notices · Legacy keys and rating guides.
June 2026 Life Science: Biology scoring notice
NYSED awards all students credit for Questions 20 and 21 because the answer choices contain errors. Include those awarded credits once when you mark the paper. This calculator looks up the final raw total you enter; it does not automatically add two credits. Do not add them again if your marked total already includes them. Read the all-editions NYSED notice.
Why one extra raw credit may leave the scale score unchanged
Conversions use discrete published tables. An extra raw credit cannot lower the scale score in these supported charts, but two adjacent raw totals can share one scale score. For example, June 2026 new-exam raw 47 and raw 48 both convert to 99. The curve is not a direct percentage calculation.
3. Reproducible worked examples
New exam: January 2026
20 raw credits convert to 65, with the chart’s official performance level 3. A scale-score target of 85 requires 35 raw credits on this chart, so a student entering 20 needs 15 more raw credits to reach that target on this same practice paper. Verify the January 2026 Life Science: Biology chart.
Legacy exam: January 2026
The legacy example button uses the following earned section credits:
Those 41 raw credits convert to 65. The minimum raw total for a scale score of 85 is 66 on that January legacy chart. Its PDF does not state performance levels, so the result does not invent one. Verify the January 2026 Living Environment chart.
Raw 20 on the new January paper and raw 20 on the legacy January paper are different inputs: the former converts to 65, while the latter converts to 38. Select the full exam title before interpreting a score.
4. Complete published conversion tables
These seven charts contain all 412 source rows. Expand the matching exam title and administration. Scores and published new-exam performance levels are reproduced exactly; no intermediate values are estimated.

65 is the common Regents passing benchmark. The calculator reports the official performance level only when the selected chart supplies one. The new exam’s level boundaries must not be imposed on a legacy Living Environment chart.
A score of 85 is an exam-score benchmark, not an automatic Mastery in Science diploma endorsement. NYSED’s endorsement also requires a Regents diploma with advanced designation and normally scores of 85 or better on three science Regents examinations. Alternatives involving granted exemptions are described in the official rules. Your school must review your full record. NYSED endorsement requirements.
The calculator does not determine local-diploma, safety-net, appeal, exemption or graduation eligibility. A result below 65 does not settle those questions. Consult your school counselor. NYSED graduation FAQ.
6. Calculator, reference-material and lab requirements
Use the permitted calculator
Graphing calculators are prohibited for both Life Science: Biology and legacy Living Environment under the linked NYSED directions. Use the specified four-function or scientific calculator. Current administration and calculator rules.
Read the materials supplied in the exam
Prepare to interpret the data, models and diagrams provided in the paper. Use the information supplied in the examination and follow the permitted-material directions instead of bringing extra reference sheets. NYSED’s new-exam directions prohibit outside science reference materials, including class notes and laboratory reports. NYSED new-exam material restrictions.
Laboratory work and investigations
NYSED requires 1,200 minutes of laboratory experience with satisfactory documented reports, in addition to classroom instruction. Current science guidance permits hands-on and simulated experiences. Check completion and exam admission with your teacher. NYSED laboratory guidance.
The new course has three required investigations involving feedback and homeostasis, lactose intolerance, and ecosystem design solutions. They prepare students for scientific reasoning; their locally assessed performance is not added to the final Regents written-test score. They replace the legacy Part D laboratory-activity framework. Official investigation framework and score treatment.
7. Focused Biology revision notes
Use these reminders to diagnose missed practice questions. They are a concise review, not a complete syllabus or a prediction of topic percentages.
Cells, transport and homeostasis
Explain how structures support functions. For membrane transport, distinguish movement down a concentration gradient from energy-dependent transport. For feedback questions, identify the disturbance, the response and how the response affects the original change.
Photosynthesis and cellular respiration
A simplified net equation for photosynthesis is shown below. Light supplies the energy; the arrow does not mean that atoms appear or disappear. Plants also carry out cellular respiration.
Aerobic respiration transfers chemical energy from glucose through reactions that support ATP production. The simplified equation below tracks the net material changes.
Genetics: probabilities depend on the model
A dominant allele is not necessarily more common in a population. For a simple single-gene Mendelian cross between two heterozygous parents, the idealised probability of a recessive homozygous offspring is:
The cross is . Here, the two letters represent the alleles of one gene. This probability applies to each offspring under the stated model; it does not guarantee exact proportions in a small family. More complex inheritance needs its own assumptions.
Evolution and natural selection
Use inherited variation, differences in reproductive success and changes across generations to explain natural selection. Individuals do not choose to evolve. Fitness concerns reproductive contribution in a particular environment, not simply physical strength.
Ecology and energy flow
Distinguish energy flow from matter cycling. Use the actual food-web arrows, data and limiting factors supplied. Population growth can be constrained by resources, interactions and environmental conditions; do not replace a supported explanation with an unsupported topic-weight rule.
Experimental reasoning
Identify the variable being changed, the measured outcome and relevant controlled conditions. Explain why a comparison or control is useful in that design. Evaluate the claim with the supplied evidence, including variability or sample limitations when relevant. Answer the specific prompt rather than listing every scientific term you know.
8. Turn a practice score into a study plan
- Choose a released paper with the exact exam title you are preparing for.
- Mark with its key, rating guide and notices. For June 2026 Life Science: Biology, apply the credit notice for Questions 20 and 21 once.
- Convert the earned raw total with that administration’s chart and choose a target.
- Classify lost credits by concept, evidence, explanation, graph, calculation or reading error. Practise the specific missed skill.
- Use a fresh question to check improvement, then a full timed paper to check consistency. Follow the time printed on the official exam.
A past-paper target is a practice planning tool. It cannot guarantee the same conversion on a future administration.
9. Frequently asked questions
Is Life Science: Biology the same exam as Living Environment?
No. The new Life Science: Biology exam began in June 2025. Legacy Living Environment had its last administration in June 2026. Match the full exam title and administration before choosing a chart.
What is the raw-credit maximum for the new exam?
It varies in the supported charts: June 2025 has 48; August 2025 and January 2026 have 45; June 2026 has 49; August 2026 has 48. Do not assume every paper is out of 50 or 85.
What changed for June 2026 Questions 20 and 21?
NYSED directs that all students receive credit for those two questions because the answer choices contain errors. Include the awarded credits once in your marked total. The calculator does not add them automatically.
What does raw 20 mean in January 2026?
On the new Life Science: Biology chart, 20 raw credits convert to 65. On the legacy Living Environment chart, raw 20 converts to 38. The full title matters.
What are the five legacy section limits?
Parts A, B-1, B-2, C and D have maximum credits of 30, 13, 12, 17 and 13, respectively. They sum to 85. Part D consists of written lab-related questions, not a separate hands-on practical.
Does every extra raw credit increase the scale score?
It cannot lower the score in the supported charts, but adjacent raw totals may share the same scale score. The calculator uses discrete table rows, not a direct percentage or interpolated line.
Why is no official level shown for a legacy result?
The included Living Environment conversion PDFs provide scale scores without performance levels. The tool does not invent levels or copy the newer exam’s boundaries onto a legacy paper.
Does 85 automatically award Mastery in Science?
No. The endorsement also depends on advanced-designation diploma requirements and the applicable combination of science exam scores or granted exemptions. Your school must check eligibility.
Are graphing calculators allowed?
No. The linked NYSED directions prohibit graphing calculators for both exams. Use the permitted four-function or scientific calculator and follow the directions for your administration.
Do investigation scores add to my written raw total?
No. Required new-course investigations support exam admission and scientific reasoning. Their locally assessed performance is not added to the final Regents written-test score.
Should I expect a Living Environment reference-table booklet?
Do not rely on an extra reference-table handout. Read the information supplied in the paper and follow NYSED’s material restrictions. Outside class notes and laboratory reports are not permitted for the new examination.
Can I enter decimals, negatives or a future exam?
Credits must be whole numbers within the selected chart’s limits; zero is valid. Only the listed published charts are supported. No old curve is silently applied to a future or unlisted exam.
Can I download my result?
Yes. A successful conversion enables CSV download containing the selected chart, source, raw and scale scores, target and limitations. Changing inputs hides the old result and requires a fresh conversion.
Who maintains this calculator?
NUM8ERS checked seven linked NYSED charts and the method on 26 October 2026. This independent practice tool is not affiliated with NYSED and does not replace official school scoring.
