How to study

What is covered in APES Unit 9?

Global Change connects atmospheric processes with changes in oceans, habitats and biodiversity. Explain the mechanism behind each impact, compare environmental responses and evaluate ways to reduce pressures. Choose a topic to practise its ten flashcards.

Unit 9 carries a published 15–20% weighting in the multiple-choice section. Combine recall with graph interpretation, data analysis and written explanations of environmental solutions.

How to study global change with flashcards

  1. Separate the mechanisms.Compare ozone depletion, the enhanced greenhouse effect, ocean warming and acidification. Identify the relevant chemical or energy pathway.
  2. Connect the feedbacks.Explain how ice loss changes albedo or how habitat fragmentation affects populations. Distinguish a driver, a feedback and a consequence.
  3. Recall, then apply.Answer before flipping and mark uncertain cards as Needs practice. Use the Unit 9 quiz to interpret evidence and justify a solution.

Atmosphere check: stratospheric ozone helps absorb harmful ultraviolet radiation. Greenhouse gases absorb and emit infrared radiation; these are different processes.

Ocean check: warming changes temperature, while CO₂-driven acidification lowers pH and reduces carbonate availability. Acidification does not require seawater to fall below pH 7.

Biodiversity check: connect a specific pressure with its effect on habitat, survival or reproduction. Then explain how the proposed conservation action reduces that pressure.

APES Unit 9 flashcard FAQs

What do APES Unit 9 flashcards cover?

These 100 flashcards cover all ten Global Change topics: ozone depletion and its reduction, the greenhouse effect, greenhouse gas increases, climate change, ocean warming, ocean acidification, invasive species, endangered species and human impacts on biodiversity.

How much of the AP Environmental Science exam is Unit 9?

College Board assigns Unit 9: Global Change a 15–20% weighting in the multiple-choice section. Revise all nine course units as part of your exam preparation.

How are ozone depletion and climate change different?

Ozone depletion reduces protective stratospheric ozone through reactions involving substances such as CFCs. Human-caused climate change is driven mainly by increased greenhouse gases that alter Earth’s energy balance. Some substances affect both processes, but the mechanisms differ.

How is ocean acidification different from ocean warming?

Ocean acidification is a change in seawater chemistry as absorbed CO₂ lowers pH and reduces carbonate availability. Ocean warming is an increase in water temperature as the ocean absorbs heat. Both can stress marine ecosystems.
