ASVAB Word Knowledge Practice Test: 123 Questions
Use this original ASVAB Word Knowledge practice test to build vocabulary from zero. Official ASVAB sources describe Word Knowledge as selecting the correct meaning of words presented in context and identifying the best synonym for a given word. This page turns that public scope into a beginner lesson path, timed practice plan, 123 original questions, full explanations, and internal links to the ASVAB and AFQT score resources.
Official Word Knowledge Scope
Word Knowledge, abbreviated WK, is the ASVAB vocabulary subtest. Official ASVAB pages describe it as the ability to select the correct meaning of words presented in context and to identify the best synonym for a given word. That makes the intent of this page specific: it is a Word Knowledge practice test, not a full ASVAB study guide, not an AFQT calculator, and not a general English grammar course.
The official ASVAB sample page shows the style of task: a word is given, or a word appears inside a short sentence, and the student must choose the closest meaning from four choices. The public official materials do not publish a school-style curriculum with vocabulary lists by grade level. The latest reliable public guidance is the official subtest description, sample question format, timing table, score guidance, and test-day instructions. This page uses those official facts for structure and writes original practice questions around that public scope.
Original practice notice: These 123 questions are original NUM8ERS practice questions. They are not real ASVAB test questions, not leaked questions, and not copied from official sample items. Use them to learn how synonym choice and context clues work, then use official testing instructions for the real exam.
Timing and Test-Day Context
Official CAT-ASVAB information lists Word Knowledge as 15 scored questions with a 9-minute time limit when no tryout questions are present. The same official table lists possible tryout questions and a longer time limit when tryout questions are included. The official ASVAB fact sheet and the official "What to Expect" page list the paper-and-pencil Word Knowledge section as 35 questions in 11 minutes. Your exact testing route matters, so follow the instructions from your recruiter, school, MEPS, MET site, or official administrator.
| Version | Official Word Knowledge timing context | Practice implication |
|---|---|---|
| CAT-ASVAB | 15 scored WK questions; 9 minutes without tryout questions. | After learning the approach, practice 15 mixed vocabulary questions in about 9 minutes. |
| CAT-ASVAB with possible tryouts | Official CAT information lists possible tryout questions and extra time when they appear. | Do not panic if the item count differs. Keep using the same synonym and context process. |
| P&P-ASVAB | 35 WK questions in 11 minutes on official public timing tables. | Practice fast recognition, but do not sacrifice careful reading of context sentences. |
The CAT-ASVAB is adaptive, and official material explains that answers cannot be reviewed or changed after submission. For Word Knowledge, that means you should not click the first familiar-looking option too quickly. Read all four choices, eliminate obvious mismatches, then choose the word that most nearly matches the target word in meaning and tone. On the paper-and-pencil ASVAB, official materials explain that examinees can review answers inside the current section, but timing is tight, so practice should still build fast recognition.
How to Use This Practice Test
If you know nothing about ASVAB Word Knowledge, do not treat vocabulary as a giant memorization wall. The subtest is not asking you to write dictionary definitions. It is asking whether you can recognize a close meaning under time pressure. On some questions, the target word stands alone and you choose the best synonym. On other questions, the target word appears in a sentence, so the surrounding words help narrow the meaning.
- Take questions 1-25 slowly with no timer and read every explanation.
- Mark each miss as a synonym miss, context miss, tone miss, or prefix/root miss.
- Rewrite the missed word in your own sentence.
- Retake missed questions after 24 hours, not immediately.
- When your slow accuracy improves, take 15-question timed sets for CAT-ASVAB pacing.
- Use official scores, not raw practice counts, with the AFQT Score Calculator or ASVAB Score Calculator.
Word Knowledge matters for AFQT because official score guidance lists WK as one of the four ASVAB subtests used to compute AFQT, along with Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension. That is why this practice page links to the AFQT Score Calculator. But the calculator and score guide have different intent. This page helps you practice vocabulary. The ASVAB Score Guide explains official score types, and the ASVAB Study Guide explains the whole exam process from zero.
Beginner Vocabulary Review
Word Knowledge is a fast verbal-recognition test. The best preparation is not random word hoarding. A better approach is to learn how meanings are built, how context narrows a word, and how wrong answer choices are designed to pull you away from the closest synonym. If you are starting from zero, your job is to build a vocabulary routine that works every day.
Step 1: Learn the Task Before Learning Word Lists
A synonym is a word with a similar meaning. If a question asks "scarce most nearly means," you are looking for the closest meaning, such as "rare." You are not looking for a word that merely appears in the same topic area. For example, "scarce" and "food" can appear in the same sentence, but "food" is not a synonym. The phrase "most nearly" matters. Two choices may be related, but only one fits the meaning closely enough.
When the target word appears in a sentence, read the full sentence first. A sentence such as "The mechanic made a precise adjustment" tells you that precise is likely connected to exactness, not speed, volume, or anger. Context clues can appear before the word, after the word, or in the tone of the whole sentence. If the sentence describes a careful measurement, the answer is probably not a word that means careless or random.
Step 2: Sort Wrong Answers by Type
Wrong choices usually fall into patterns. One choice may be the opposite of the target word. One may be related to the sentence topic but not to the target word. One may sound similar but mean something else. One may be too strong or too weak. If the target word is "cautious," a strong synonym is "careful." A word like "afraid" may be related in feeling but is not the best synonym because cautious can simply mean careful, not necessarily frightened.
Do not choose a word just because you have seen it before. Familiar words are not always correct. If the target word is "brief," the answer is "short." A familiar word such as "paper" might fit a topic about reports, but it does not define brief. Your process should be meaning first, familiarity second.
Step 3: Use Prefixes, Roots, and Word Families
Word parts can rescue unfamiliar items. The prefix "re-" often means again, as in rebuild or review. "Pre-" often means before, as in preview. "Sub-" can mean under, and "trans-" can mean across. If you know that "portable" means able to be carried, then "transport" becomes easier to connect with carrying across or moving. Word parts do not solve every question, but they create useful clues.
Word families also help. If you know "predict" means to say before something happens, then "prediction" is a statement about what may happen. If you know "visible" means able to be seen, then "visibility" relates to how well something can be seen. Build families rather than isolated flashcards. One useful word can teach several related words.
Step 4: Build a Military-Useful Vocabulary Notebook
For this subtest, a good notebook entry is short. Write the word, a plain meaning, one original sentence, and one opposite if useful. For example: "durable = long-lasting; The durable case protected the radio; opposite = fragile." That is stronger than copying a dictionary paragraph because it trains recognition. Keep the sentence practical. ASVAB context often uses everyday work, school, equipment, instructions, movement, safety, and decision situations.
Review missed words in small groups. Do not review 200 words at once. Ten words, used well, are more valuable than a long list you never apply. After reviewing, cover the meanings and explain each word aloud. If you cannot explain it in plain English, you do not know it yet.
Step 5: Use Context Clues Without Overreading
Context clues are powerful, but do not invent details that are not there. If a sentence says "The weather was severe, so the event was postponed," severe probably means serious or harsh. It does not necessarily mean snowy, windy, or hot unless the sentence gives that detail. Choose the meaning the sentence supports, not the story you imagine around it.
Look for contrast words such as but, however, although, unlike, and instead. They often signal an opposite idea. Look for explanation words such as because, since, which means, or for example. They often define the target word indirectly. If the sentence says "The instructions were concise, so the trainee finished reading them quickly," quickly helps you see that concise means brief, not complicated.
Step 6: Practice Under Realistic Speed After Accuracy
Word Knowledge timing is fast. The official CAT-ASVAB table lists 15 scored questions and 9 minutes without tryout questions. The paper-and-pencil table lists 35 questions in 11 minutes. But a beginner should not begin with speed drills. First learn the process, then add timing. Early rushing teaches bad habits: clicking familiar distractors, skipping the sentence, and ignoring tone.
After you complete this 123-question practice test slowly, create short timed sets. Choose 15 mixed questions and give yourself about 9 minutes. Then choose 35 mixed questions and give yourself about 11 minutes for paper-and-pencil pacing. Track not just the number correct, but the reason for every miss. A student who misses 10 questions for 10 different reasons needs vocabulary growth. A student who misses 10 questions because of context clues has a specific strategy problem to fix.
Step 7: Keep This Page in the ASVAB Cluster
This page should support the ASVAB cluster without competing with it. Use it for Word Knowledge practice only. Use the ASVAB Arithmetic Reasoning Practice Test for math word problems, the ASVAB General Science Practice Test for science, the ASVAB Study Guide for overall testing logistics, and the ASVAB Score Guide for score interpretation. That intent separation helps a student move to the right page and gives search engines a cleaner topical map.
Seven-Day Word Knowledge Routine for Beginners
Day 1 is not a testing day. Read the official scope in this guide, then work only the first 25 questions without timing. For each missed word, write a four-part note: target word, plain meaning, your own sentence, and one wrong answer that almost fooled you. The wrong-answer note is important because it tells you how you were tricked. If you missed "adequate" because you chose a word meaning excellent, your issue was degree. Adequate means enough, not outstanding.
Day 2 should focus on context. Work the sentence-based questions slowly and underline the clue that points to the answer. If the sentence says a delay was temporary, the clue is time limit, so the meaning cannot be permanent. If the sentence says a report was confidential, the clue is information control, so public is the opposite. This type of clue work is more useful than rereading a vocabulary list because the ASVAB format asks you to recognize meaning inside compact wording.
Day 3 is for word families. Group missed words that share an idea: time words such as prior, temporary, imminent, and postponed; clarity words such as vague, explicit, coherent, and clarify; amount words such as abundant, scarce, excess, minimal, and substantial. Grouping words by meaning helps you remember them under pressure. It also helps you see opposites, which are common distractors in vocabulary questions.
Day 4 is your first timed day. Choose 15 questions from different parts of the page and give yourself about 9 minutes. Do not open explanations while timed. After the set, review every answer, including correct ones that were lucky guesses. A lucky guess should be treated as a miss because it will not be reliable on the real test. Day 5 should repeat that timed set format with a different group of questions.
Day 6 should connect Word Knowledge to AFQT planning. Official score guidance lists WK as part of AFQT, so weak vocabulary can affect the entrance-eligibility score, not just a verbal subtest profile. Use this page for practice, then use the AFQT Score Calculator only when you have official score inputs or a clearly labeled practice estimate. Day 7 is a review day: retake only missed items, write new sentences, and then move to Paragraph Comprehension or another AFQT area rather than repeating words you already know.

What Your Practice Result Means
This practice test does not produce an official ASVAB score. Official ASVAB subtest results are reported as standard scores, and AFQT is computed from official standard scores for Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, and Word Knowledge. Treat this page as a vocabulary diagnostic. It tells you whether you are missing basic synonyms, misreading context, falling for opposites, or losing time.
| Practice score out of 123 | Meaning | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| 105-123 | Strong practice readiness | Move to timed 15-question and 35-question mixed sets. |
| 86-104 | Useful vocabulary base with several gaps | Review missed words by type: synonym, context, tone, prefix, or root. |
| 62-85 | Basic recognition is forming, but distractors are still pulling you off | Slow down, write one original sentence per missed word, and retake after 24 hours. |
| Below 62 | Start with core vocabulary and context clues | Use the beginner review and explanations as lessons before timing yourself. |

What does Word Knowledge test?
Official ASVAB materials describe Word Knowledge as selecting the correct meaning of words presented in context and identifying the best synonym for a given word.

What To Study After Word Knowledge Practice
Word Knowledge is vocabulary precision. The next page should depend on whether you missed because you did not know the word or because context inside a passage was hard to follow.
- Take Word Knowledge Practice Test 2 after reviewing missed synonyms and word-part patterns.
- Use Paragraph Comprehension Practice if vocabulary is improving but short passages still feel unclear.
- Use Paragraph Comprehension Practice Test 2 for a fresh reading check after the first PC set.
- Use the AFQT Score Calculator because WK contributes to the verbal side of AFQT.
- Use Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge if verbal accuracy is now stronger than math accuracy.
