📚 What is IB to ATAR Conversion?
The IB to ATAR conversion is a standardized process used by Australian universities to convert International Baccalaureate Diploma scores into an equivalent Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). This conversion allows fair comparison between IB students and students who completed Australian state-based curricula such as HSC, VCE, QCE, or WACE.
The IB Diploma is scored out of 45 points, comprising 42 points from six subjects (each graded 1-7) and up to 3 bonus points from Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Extended Essay (EE). The mathematical representation is:
IB Total Score = (Subject 1 + Subject 2 + Subject 3 + Subject 4 + Subject 5 + Subject 6) + TOK/EE Bonus
Maximum: 42 + 3 = 45 points
🔢 Understanding IBAS (IB Admissions Score)
From November 2022 onwards, IB students in Australia receive an IB Admissions Score (IBAS) in addition to their whole number IB score. The IBAS uses decimal increments (0.25, 0.50, 0.75) to differentiate students who achieved the same overall IB score.
How IBAS is Calculated:
- UAC analyzes your performance within each grade band for every subject
- For example, if Grade 6 boundaries are 60-69 marks and you scored 68, you're in the high range of that band
- An average position is calculated across all six subjects
- The result is rounded to intervals of 0.25 (e.g., 37.00, 37.25, 37.50, 37.75)
- This IBAS is then converted to a Combined Rank (ATAR equivalent)
Example: Two students with 37/45 may receive different ATAR equivalents - Student A with IBAS 37.00 = 93.00 ATAR, while Student B with IBAS 37.75 = 93.95 ATAR.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What IB score do I need for a 90 ATAR?
To achieve approximately 90 ATAR, you need an IB score of 35.50-35.75 (90.60-91.05 ATAR). An IB score of 36.00 converts to 91.45 ATAR.
Is 36 IB to ATAR a good score?
36 IB converts to 91.45 ATAR, which is considered a very good score. This is competitive for many university courses including engineering, science, and business programs. It places you in approximately the top 9% of students nationally.
Is 35 IB to ATAR competitive?
35 IB converts to 89.75 ATAR. This is competitive for many undergraduate programs and qualifies you for a wide range of courses at Australian universities. It's considered an above-average performance.
What IB score equals 99.95 ATAR?
To achieve 99.95 ATAR, you need an IBAS of at least 45.50. Both 45.50 and 45.75 IBAS convert to 99.95 ATAR, while 45.25 converts to 99.90 ATAR.
How is IB converted to ATAR for university admission?
IB scores are converted to a Combined Rank (ATAR equivalent) using official conversion tables published by UAC and other state tertiary admission centers. For Australian IB students (November 2022 onwards), the conversion uses IBAS (IB Admissions Score) which provides more granular differentiation. Universities treat this Combined Rank the same as an ATAR for admission purposes.
Do conversion tables change each year?
Yes, IB to ATAR conversion tables are updated annually based on statistical analysis comparing IB and ATAR cohort performance. Changes are typically minor (0.1-0.3 ATAR points) but can affect competitive course cut-offs. Always use the most current official table from UAC or your state's tertiary admissions center.
Can I use my IB score to apply to all Australian universities?
Yes, all Australian universities accept the IB Diploma as equivalent to Year 12 qualifications. You apply through state-based portals (UAC for NSW/ACT, VTAC for Victoria, QTAC for Queensland, TISC for WA). Some courses may have additional IB-specific prerequisites, such as requiring Higher Level subjects.
What is a good IB score for Medicine?
Most Australian Medicine programs require an IB score of approximately 36-38+ (equivalent to 91.45-94.25+ ATAR), plus UCAT results and interview performance. Top medical schools may require higher scores. Some also specify prerequisites like HL Chemistry or HL Biology.
How hard is it to get 40+ IB score?
Approximately 19.43% of IB students in Australia achieved 40 or above in 2023. A score of 40.00 converts to 96.30 ATAR. While challenging, it's more common than achieving 96+ ATAR in state systems. The IB's holistic curriculum requires consistent performance across all subjects plus TOK and Extended Essay.
