IBAS and IB to ATAR Equivalent Converter

IB detail that matters

The Direct Answer: What an ATAR Calculator Can and Cannot Do in 2026

An ATAR calculator can estimate your likely admissions rank band when you enter results that are close to the scaled scores used by your state's tertiary admissions centre. It cannot reproduce your official ATAR from raw school percentages, trial marks or expected exam marks alone. The missing step is scaling. Scaling is not a fixed bonus for a subject and it is not a difficulty label. It is a yearly statistical process that puts different courses onto a common comparison scale before each student's aggregate is ranked against the relevant age cohort.

The safest way to use this page is to treat it as a planning calculator. If you are in NSW, enter likely scaled marks for your best 10 HSC units, including English. If you are in Victoria, enter likely VTAC scaled study scores, not raw VCE study scores, because the VCE aggregate is built from English plus the next best three studies plus increments. If you are in Queensland, enter five eligible scaled QCE inputs. If you are in Western Australia, enter the best four scaled WACE scores plus any current LOTE, Mathematics Methods and Mathematics Specialist bonus source scores because TISC's current published rule still allows those bonuses. The output deliberately uses a range. A false precise estimate such as 91.37 can look authoritative, but official ATARs are released only after the yearly cohort is ranked. A planning range such as 88.00 to 92.95 is more honest. It tells you whether you are likely to be researching courses in the 70s, 80s, low 90s, high 90s or 99-plus bands without pretending that the calculator has access to the year's final scaling distribution.

For 2026, the two biggest content updates are the IB conversion schedule and the Western Australia rule note. Australian IB students applying in 2026 for 2027 entry use the updated national IBAS and Combined Rank schedule, where a whole IB 44 maps to 99.75 and a whole IB 40 maps to 96.85. Western Australia's previously proposed change to remove the TEA bonus structure has been postponed according to TISC's current ATAR page, so the current public rule still lists best four scaled scores plus applicable 10 percent LOTE and mathematics bonuses, with a maximum TEA of 430.

Do not compare ATAR estimates with course entry pages without checking selection rank rules. A course listing may show a lowest selection rank, which can include adjustment factors. Your raw ATAR, your adjusted selection rank, your prerequisites, your portfolio, your interview score and your test score can all sit in different parts of the admissions decision.

2026 ATAR Calculation Rules by State and Territory

The ATAR is national in scale but local in construction. A 90.00 ATAR is comparable across states, but the path to that rank is not identical. The most common mistake on calculator pages is to describe ATAR as the sum of "best five subjects" and stop there. That is only roughly useful for some systems. It misses English rules in NSW and Victoria, the ACT's course package model, SATAC's 90-credit university aggregate, Tasmania's TE Score, and Western Australia's TEA bonuses.

NSW HSC through UAC

In NSW, UAC calculates the ATAR from scaled marks in 10 units of eligible HSC courses. The aggregate must include the best 2 units of English, then the best 8 units from the remaining eligible units. That English rule matters because English is not optional in the aggregate. A student with very strong mathematics and science marks but a weaker English result cannot simply drop English from the UAC aggregate. The calculator therefore asks for English as one of the five 2-unit scores when NSW is selected.

UAC's public explanation also makes a second point that students often overlook: the ATAR is a rank, not a mark. HSC marks report achievement against course standards, while the ATAR reports position against the age cohort. This is why an HSC mark average and an ATAR estimate are not interchangeable. A set of marks that looks similar across two students can produce different ATARs if the course mix, scaling and aggregate contribution are different.

For 2026 NSW HSC students, UAC lists ATAR release through its website on 16 December 2026 at 9:00 am. UAC also states that if a student receives an ATAR between 0.00 and 30.00, the official record is shown as "30 or less". That matters when interpreting low-end calculator estimates. A calculator can display a number below 30 for planning, but the official advice notice may not show that exact figure.

ACT Senior Secondary Certificate through BSSS

The ACT uses a different structure from the NSW HSC, even though ACT and NSW ATARs are comparable for university entry. The ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies explains that the calculation is based on a student's course package. Its public qualification guidance describes the ATAR calculation as using the best three major courses plus 0.6 of the next best major or minor. Those aggregate scores are then ranked and converted to an age rank using a table supplied by the NSW Technical Committee on Scaling. The calculator uses that structure for the ACT mode rather than forcing ACT students into a five-subject HSC pattern.

The practical takeaway for ACT students is that course packaging matters. A course with a weighting of zero on the Tertiary Entrance Statement was not used in the ATAR calculation. A subject that felt important during Year 11 or Year 12 may still be outside the final package if it is not among the best contributing courses. When planning, ACT students should check with their college, read their Tertiary Entrance Statement carefully, and use this calculator only as a direction-of-travel tool.

Victoria VCE through VTAC

Victoria's ATAR is built from a VTAC aggregate. The core structure is the "primary four": the VTAC scaled study score in one English study plus the next best three permissible scaled study scores. If available, VTAC then adds increments, normally 10 percent of a fifth and sixth permissible scaled score or another permissible increment such as certain VET or higher education increments. The maximum ordinary VCE-style aggregate is often discussed as 210 because four scaled study scores can contribute up to 200 and two 10 percent increments can contribute up to 10 more.

The word "scaled" is doing a lot of work here. A raw VCE study score of 40 is not necessarily a VTAC scaled study score of 40. VTAC scales study scores each year so that students can be compared across different study combinations. Queensland QCE through QTAC

QTAC calculates the Queensland ATAR from an aggregate of scaled results from the five best ATAR-eligible inputs. The three broad combinations are five General subjects, four General subjects plus one Applied subject, or four General subjects plus one completed VET qualification at AQF Certificate III level or higher. Precluded combinations and subject rules can affect what is eligible. The QLD mode in this calculator therefore asks for five eligible inputs, but the important word is eligible. If a subject or qualification is not allowed in your ATAR combination, entering it here will overstate the estimate.

QTAC also separates the ATAR from the selection rank used by universities. Adjustment factors, prerequisites and institution rules can change the rank used for offers. A student with an 88 ATAR may have a higher selection rank for some courses and no usable eligibility for another course if a prerequisite is missing. Western Australia WACE through TISC

Western Australia deserves a careful 2026 update because older content on the web may still mention a coming TEA change. TISC's current ATAR page states that the TEA is the sum of the best four scaled scores plus 10 percent of the best Language Other Than English scaled score, if applicable, plus 10 percent of Mathematics Methods ATAR, if applicable, plus 10 percent of Mathematics Specialist ATAR, if applicable. The same page states that the maximum TEA is 430 and adds that the proposed TEA calculation change has been postponed until further notice. That is the rule reflected in this calculator.

This does not mean every WA student should choose a language or advanced mathematics only for a bonus. TISC also explains that scaled scores depend on the yearly marks adjustment and scaling process. A subject bonus helps only if the student can produce a usable scaled score in the relevant course. The stronger planning question is: which four courses plus any eligible bonus courses give the best realistic TEA while still meeting WACE, English competence and university prerequisite requirements?

South Australia and Northern Territory SACE/NTCET through SATAC

SATAC calculates the university aggregate and ATAR for SACE and NTCET students. To be eligible for a university aggregate, students must qualify for the SACE or NTCET, follow precluded combination and counting restriction rules, complete at least 90 credits of Tertiary Admissions Subjects and Recognised Studies at Stage 2, and make sure at least 60 of those 90 credits come from 20-credit TAS or valid subject pairs. SATAC describes the university aggregate as coming from the best scaled scores from three 20-credit TAS subjects, plus the best result from the flexible option.

Because the SACE/NTCET structure is credit-based, a simple five-box calculator is not a good representation. The SA/NT mode in this page asks for the university aggregate out of 90. Tasmania TCE through TASC and the University of Tasmania

Tasmania uses a Tertiary Entrance Score, or TE Score, before converting to an ATAR. TASC explains that eligible students have their overall TE Score calculated from the combination of scaled results that gives the highest possible score. The common route uses five Level 3 or Level 4 TASC accredited courses over two senior secondary years, but HAP and UCP units can also contribute under specific rules. From the 2025 calculation change onward, the requirement for three of the contributing results to be from the final year was removed. The best eligible results from two senior secondary years can be used.

The Tasmanian mode in the calculator is deliberately direct: it asks for TE Score rather than classroom percentages. That is because the ATAR conversion depends on the year's TE Score distribution. TASC publishes conversion reports after results are available, and the table differs each year. A TE Score estimate can still help, but official conversion is the reliable number.

2026 IB to ATAR Equivalent Table

The official language is important: Australian IB students receive an IBAS and then an ATAR-like Combined Rank. GPA to ATAR: Use It as a Translation, Not an Official Conversion

GPA and ATAR measure different things. ATAR is a rank against a school-leaver age cohort. GPA is usually a grade average from completed coursework, and the scale varies by country, institution and course level. A 4.0 GPA from one high school or university is not automatically equivalent to a 4.0 GPA from another institution, and neither is automatically equivalent to a specific ATAR.

For that reason, this page treats GPA as an admissions translation tool. It can help international families, counsellors and students get a rough sense of whether a record feels closer to a 70, 80, 90 or 95-plus ATAR band. It should not be used to claim official eligibility. Example 1: NSW student with strong but uneven subjects

A NSW student expects scaled marks of 84 in English Advanced, 91 in Mathematics Advanced, 88 in Biology, 90 in Chemistry and 82 in Business Studies. A weak English mark cannot be dropped because UAC must include the best 2 units of English. The estimate is therefore built from all five 2-unit scores, not simply the four strongest non-English results. Example 2: Victorian student with a strong fifth study

A Victorian student enters a scaled English study score of 38, then scaled scores of 44, 41 and 39 for the next three best studies. A fifth scaled score of 40 contributes an increment of 4.0, not the full 40. A sixth scaled score, if available and permissible, can add another 10 percent increment. This is why a Victorian student with six studies does not simply add all six study scores. The primary four dominate the aggregate, while the fifth and sixth provide smaller but still meaningful lifts.

Example 3: Queensland student with an Applied subject

A Queensland student has four General subjects and one Applied subject. QTAC allows a qualifying pattern of four General subjects plus one Applied subject, but the Applied subject still has to be part of an eligible ATAR input combination and it will be scaled in the same broad process of comparing achievement across inputs. The planning estimate should use the five eligible inputs, not every subject studied at school. If the student's preferred course also has subject prerequisites, the ATAR estimate is only one part of the decision.

Example 4: Western Australian student with LOTE and Mathematics Methods

A WA student has scaled scores of 78, 74, 71, 68 and 62. Their best four sum to 291. If the 68 is a LOTE score, TISC's current rule can add 6.8 as a LOTE bonus. If the 62 is Mathematics Methods, it can also add 6.2 as a mathematics bonus even if that course is not in the best four. Under the current published rule, the TEA estimate becomes 304.0. The student should still check TISC directly because unacceptable combinations, course repetition and year rules can change what is counted.

Example 5: IB student comparing whole score and IBAS

An IB student with a whole score of 40 has a 2026 base Combined Rank of 96.85. If the same student receives an Australian IBAS of 40.75, the fine-grained schedule maps that to 97.10. The difference is small but meaningful in tight course bands. This is why a whole-score table is a good first answer, while the IBAS converter is the better final planning answer once the student has a quarter-point score.

Example 6: Medicine planning with ATAR, UCAT and interviews

A high ATAR estimate can be necessary for direct-entry medicine, but it is rarely sufficient by itself. A high-scaling subject can still hurt your aggregate if your result in that subject is much lower than what you could have achieved elsewhere. Engineering may need mathematics or physics; health courses may need chemistry or biology; some commerce courses recommend mathematics; some creative courses rely more on portfolios. Third, choose remaining subjects where you can realistically produce strong results.

Do not chase scaling rumours without checking official material. Scaling patterns change because each year's cohort changes. A subject that scaled strongly in one year may not move the same way in another year. More importantly, published anecdotes usually ignore the student's starting strength. A school percentage, an examination mark, a study score, a scaled study score, a TE Score, a university aggregate and a selection rank are different objects. If it came from a school report, it may show subject achievement. If it came from an admissions centre, it may already be scaled. A second mistake is averaging subjects that are not equally counted. Victoria is the clearest example. The fifth and sixth permissible VCE studies do not count the same way as the primary four.
