Use the same routine every time. A consistent method prevents the most common row, column, unit, and sequence errors.
Read the title first

Identify labels and headers

Check every unit

Finding the highest table value
The question asks who scored highest in Science. Go directly to the Science column: Alex 92, Maria 88, James 85. Because 92 is the greatest value, Alex is correct. Reading across the wrong row would answer a different question.
Calculating time between events
The first transcontinental telephone call is dated 1915 and the first mobile call is dated 1973. Calculate 1973 − 1915 = 58. The difference is 58 years, and the unit must appear in the final answer.
Comparing population growth
Calculate the increase for each city: Springfield 52,000 − 45,000 = 7,000, Riverside 41,000 − 38,000 = 3,000, and Oakdale 35,000 − 29,000 = 6,000. Springfield has the largest increase.

Reading the wrong intersection
Students sometimes find the correct row but use a value from the neighboring column. Trace from both labels until the row and column meet.
Ignoring units

Comparing totals instead of changes
The largest final value is not always the largest increase. When the question asks about change, subtract the starting value from the ending value for every option.

For “immediately before” or “immediately after,” choose the adjacent event or step—not an earlier cause or later outcome.
