ASVAB Word Knowledge Practice Test 2: 180 Questions
Use this second ASVAB Word Knowledge practice test after the main ASVAB Word Knowledge Practice Test. Official ASVAB sources describe Word Knowledge as selecting the correct meaning of words presented in context and identifying the best synonym for a given word. This page gives a fresh vocabulary set, a beginner method, official timing context, answer explanations, and internal links to the AFQT verbal study path.
Why This Test 2 Page Exists
This page is a second Word Knowledge practice set, not a rewritten copy of the first page. Test 1 introduces the basic WK practice intent and gives the first large set of vocabulary questions. Test 2 is for students who need another full mixed set before timed work, retake preparation, or AFQT verbal repair. That separation helps students and search engines: a person searching for "ASVAB Word Knowledge Practice Test 2" wants fresh vocabulary practice, not another broad explanation of the ASVAB.
Word Knowledge is especially important for beginners because it contributes to AFQT through the official four-subtest AFQT structure. Official ASVAB score guidance lists Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning, and Mathematics Knowledge as the subtests used to compute AFQT. This page does not calculate an official score. It gives a raw practice diagnostic so you can see whether your misses are coming from weak synonyms, missed context clues, confusing opposites, tone errors, or unfamiliar word parts.
Original practice notice: These 180 questions are original NUM8ERS study questions. They are not real ASVAB items, not leaked questions, and not copied from official sample questions. Official ASVAB material treats test questions as controlled testing materials, so this page teaches public skill areas without reproducing protected content.
Official Word Knowledge Scope
Official ASVAB pages place Word Knowledge in the Verbal domain. The public subtest description says WK measures the ability to select the correct meaning of words presented in context and identify the best synonym for a given word. The official sample page shows that some items ask for a direct synonym and some use a short sentence. The safe study interpretation is clear: you need fast meaning recognition, not grammar rules, spelling drills, or essay writing.
The ASVAB program does not publish a full school curriculum for Word Knowledge with a fixed vocabulary list. The latest official public data gives the subtest purpose, sample format, timing, score relationship, and test-day behavior. This Test 2 page uses those official facts as boundaries, then creates original practice items in the same public skill lane. The study categories below are learning categories, not separate official score-report lines.
| WK study lane | What it trains | Common miss |
|---|---|---|
| Direct synonyms | Choosing the closest meaning when the target word stands alone. | Picking a related topic word instead of a true synonym. |
| Context meaning | Using a sentence to decide which meaning fits the situation. | Ignoring contrast words such as but, although, and however. |
| Tone and degree | Separating mild words from strong words and positive words from negative words. | Choosing a word that is too extreme or too weak. |
| Word parts | Using prefixes, roots, and suffixes as clues. | Guessing from sound only instead of meaning. |
| Opposites as traps | Recognizing answer choices that mean the reverse of the target. | Choosing the antonym because it feels familiar. |
Timing and Test-Day Context
Official CAT-ASVAB information lists Word Knowledge as 15 scored questions with a 9-minute time limit when no tryout questions are present. The same official CAT-ASVAB table lists possible tryout questions and a longer time limit when tryouts appear. Official "What to Expect" guidance explains that tryout questions do not count toward the score and may be randomly dispersed in selected subtests. The official fact sheet lists paper-and-pencil Word Knowledge as 35 questions in 11 minutes.
That timing is fast. On a first pass, do not rush this whole page. Learn the process first, then build speed in small sets. When accuracy is steady, take 15-question sets in about 9 minutes for CAT-style practice and 35-question sets in about 11 minutes for paper-style pace. Official material also explains that CAT-ASVAB answers cannot be reviewed after submission, so train yourself to read the whole item, eliminate obvious mismatches, and make one deliberate choice.
| Practice mode | How to use Test 2 | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Untimed learning pass | Answer all 180 questions with explanations closed until after each choice. | Builds vocabulary recognition before the timer changes your behavior. |
| CAT-style set | Choose 15 mixed questions and set 9 minutes. | Matches the official scored WK count and no-tryout timing context. |
| P&P-style set | Choose 35 mixed questions and set 11 minutes. | Builds fast recognition for the paper-and-pencil pacing table. |
| Missed-word retake | Retake missed words after 24 hours with no explanations open. | Shows whether you learned the meaning or only remembered the letter. |
Beginner Vocabulary Method
If you are starting from zero, do not begin with a random list of hundreds of words. Begin with a decision routine. First, decide whether the item is asking for a direct synonym or a context meaning. Second, say the target word in a plain sentence if you know it. Third, eliminate any answer that is clearly opposite, too narrow, too broad, or from the wrong topic. Fourth, compare the last two choices by meaning and tone. Fifth, after the explanation, write the word in your own sentence.
For direct synonym questions, focus on the phrase "most nearly means." The answer does not have to match every possible dictionary meaning. It needs to be the closest option in that item. For context questions, the sentence controls the meaning. A word such as "stable" can describe a steady situation, a firm structure, or a building for animals in other contexts. If the sentence says "The patient's condition remained stable," the meaning is steady, not a horse barn.
Build a short error log. Do not just write "missed." Write the reason. Use labels such as antonym trap, topic trap, degree trap, context skipped, root clue missed, or unfamiliar word. A student who misses antonym traps should slow down and ask whether the choice is the reverse. A student who misses context clues should underline the clue word. A student who misses degree traps should compare mild, strong, positive, negative, formal, and informal meanings.
Use word parts carefully. Prefixes such as un-, re-, pre-, sub-, trans-, and inter- often help. Suffixes such as -able, -less, -ful, and -tion also help. But word parts are clues, not guarantees. The target word still has to fit the sentence. If a word part clue and sentence clue disagree, trust the sentence and choose the meaning that fits the full item.
Word Knowledge Test 2 Review Map
Synonym Precision
Synonym questions reward close meaning. "Brief" means short, not easy. "Cautious" means careful, not afraid. "Assist" means help, not command. When two options feel related, ask which one could replace the target word in a simple sentence without changing the meaning.
Context Clues
Sentence clues often define the target indirectly. Contrast clues use but, however, although, and unlike. Explanation clues use because, since, meaning, and for example. Result clues show what happened because of the target word. Underline the clue before choosing.
Tone and Degree
Some choices are too intense. "Concerned" is not the same as terrified. "Adequate" means enough, not excellent. "Sparse" means thin or scattered, not absent. The ASVAB often rewards a steady, plain meaning over the most dramatic option.
AFQT Connection
Word Knowledge is part of AFQT, along with Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning, and Mathematics Knowledge. Pair this page with Paragraph Comprehension practice so verbal improvement is not limited to isolated vocabulary.
Test 2 rule: Every missed item needs a sentence. If the word is "fragile," write "The fragile glass broke when it fell." A word you can use correctly is more useful than a word you only recognize once.

What Your Test 2 Score Means
This page gives a practice count, not an official ASVAB score. Official ASVAB score guidance explains that subtest scores are standard scores with a fixed mean and standard deviation, not raw percentages. Official AFQT guidance says AFQT is computed from official standard scores for Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, and Word Knowledge. Your raw result here is a vocabulary diagnostic. It tells you what to repair before a timed set or official test.
| Practice score out of 180 | Meaning | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| 153-180 | Strong WK practice readiness | Move into timed 15-question CAT-style sets and 35-question paper-style sets. |
| 126-152 | Good foundation with fixable vocabulary gaps | Sort misses by synonym, context, tone, or word-part error and retake those words. |
| 90-125 | Basic recognition is forming but unreliable | Write original sentences for every missed word before adding a timer. |
| Below 90 | Start with core vocabulary habits | Use Test 1 and Test 2 in 20-question untimed blocks and build a missed-word notebook. |

- AFQT Score Calculator: use this because WK is one of the four official AFQT subtests.
- ASVAB Score Calculator: use this after you have official score-report data, not raw practice counts.
- ASVAB Score Guide: use this for standard scores, AFQT percentiles, and score-report interpretation.

ASVAB Word Knowledge Practice Test 2 FAQs
Is this different from the first Word Knowledge practice test?
Yes. This is a second original mixed vocabulary set for students who need more WK practice after Test 1. It supports the first page instead of replacing it.
Are these real ASVAB Word Knowledge questions?
No. These are original practice questions written from the official public WK skill description. They are not copied from official ASVAB test forms or official sample questions.
What does Word Knowledge test?
Official ASVAB materials describe Word Knowledge as selecting the correct meaning of words presented in context and identifying the best synonym for a given word.
Does Word Knowledge count toward AFQT?
Yes. Official score guidance lists Word Knowledge as one of the four subtests used to compute AFQT, along with Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning, and Mathematics Knowledge.
How many Word Knowledge questions are on the real ASVAB?
Official CAT-ASVAB information lists 15 scored Word Knowledge questions with 9 minutes when no tryout questions are present. The official fact sheet lists paper-and-pencil Word Knowledge as 35 questions in 11 minutes.
What To Study After Word Knowledge Test 2
Use this second vocabulary set to check whether word review is actually sticking. If isolated vocabulary is stronger, move into passage reading instead of repeating synonyms only.
- Review Word Knowledge Practice Test 1 if the same vocabulary patterns appeared in both sets.
- Use Paragraph Comprehension Practice if the weak point is using words inside short passages.
- Use Paragraph Comprehension Practice Test 2 when you want a second fresh reading set.
- Use the AFQT Score Calculator after WK practice to keep verbal work tied to AFQT planning.
- Use the ASVAB Score Guide if your next question is score meaning, not vocabulary practice.
Use the ASVAB Study Guide for full exam logistics and retake planning.
