How do I calculate work hours?
Enter your clock in and clock out times. The calculator
automatically subtracts lunch breaks and additional break minutes, then calculates total hours worked.
Formula: (Clock Out - Clock In) - Lunch Duration - Breaks.
How does overtime calculation work?
Daily overtime is hours beyond 8/day (configurable).
Weekly overtime is hours beyond 40/week. OT is paid at 1.5x regular rate by default.
Some states require double time after 12 hours.
How do I add lunch breaks?
Use the Lunch Out and Lunch In columns for unpaid meal breaks.
Example: Lunch Out 12:00, Lunch In 12:30 = 30-minute unpaid break automatically deducted from total
hours.
What about paid vs unpaid breaks?
Unpaid breaks (lunch) should be entered in the lunch columns or
break minutes. Paid breaks (short 15-min breaks) shouldn't be deducted—don't enter
them. Check your company policy.
How is gross pay calculated?
Gross Pay = (Regular Hours × Hourly Rate) + (OT Hours × Hourly Rate × OT
Multiplier). This is pre-tax income before deductions for taxes, insurance, retirement,
etc.
What's the difference between gross and net pay?
Gross pay is your total earnings before deductions. Net
pay (take-home) is after taxes and deductions. This calculator shows gross pay only—net
depends on your tax situation.
Is overtime after 8 hours daily or 40 hours weekly?
It depends on location/employer. Federal law (FLSA) requires
overtime after 40 hours/week. Some states (California, Alaska, Nevada, Colorado) also require daily
overtime after 8 hours.
How do I calculate time and a half?
Time and a half = Hourly Rate × 1.5. If you earn $20/hour, OT =
$30/hour. Example: 45 hours worked = 40 regular ($800) + 5 OT ($150) = $950 gross.
Can I calculate double time?
Yes! Change the Overtime Multiplier to 2x. California requires
double time after 12 hours/day and for work on the 7th consecutive day over 8 hours.
How do I handle overnight shifts?
For shifts crossing midnight, enter times as they appear. Example: Clock In 10:00
PM, Clock Out 6:00 AM. The calculator handles overnight shifts automatically.
What if I work different hours each day?
Enter each day's times individually. The calculator totals all days and applies
overtime rules based on your settings. Variable schedules are fully supported.
How accurate is this time card calculator?
Calculations are precise to the minute. However, always verify with your employer's
official system. Rounding rules vary by company (some round to 15-minute increments).
Can I save my timesheet?
Use Print Timesheet and save as PDF. Your browser may also
remember form data. For permanent records, we recommend saving the PDF or using your employer's time
tracking system.
How do I calculate hours for biweekly pay?
Complete two weeks of entries (use separate calculations) and add totals. Biweekly
= 2 weeks, so OT threshold is typically 80 hours for the pay period.
What's a typical work week in hours?
Full-time is typically 40 hours/week (8 hrs/day × 5 days).
Part-time varies but is usually under 30-35 hours. Overtime begins after 40 hours under
federal law.
Are salaried employees eligible for overtime?
It depends. Non-exempt salaried employees earn OT. Exempt
salaried employees (managers, professionals earning above threshold) typically don't. Check
DOL guidelines and your classification.
How do I track time for multiple jobs?
Use separate time cards for each job. Each employer calculates overtime
independently. If you have multiple employers, you may work 30 hours at each without OT at either.
